Why does it become hard to breathe when I think about breathing?
The Autonomic Nervous System Triggers Hyperventilation Under stress, when the hormones kick in, your adrenaline surges, your heart beats faster, blood pressure rises, and you start to breathe more rapidly. Your airways open wider. These changes happen so quickly that you may not be aware of them.

Yes you are most likely consciously breathing when you are thinking about it but even then, and 99\% of the time it’s happening automatically. Think about it, you sleep how many hours during the night.. of course you are not consciously breathing when you sleep, so it must be automatic.
Do you become fixated on your breathing?
Imagine for a moment that, for some reason, you become aware of your breathing. You begin to wonder if you’re breathing right. You become anxious and feel like you have to take each breath consciously and become fixated on your breathing.
