Why does phosphorus exist as P4 and not p2?

The P2 molecule of phosphorus is not found because of the larger size of the phosphorus atom. The phosphorus is so larger that the p-orbitals which are required to overlapp sideways , are unable to overlapp sufficiently to make a pie bond. and thus it makes P4 molecule.

What does P4 mean?

P4 is a phosphorus molecule. Here 4 is after the atomic symbol ( a subscript) whenever there is a subscript ( a number after the symbol of the element ) it means that the two or more then two atoms of the same element are in chemical bonding and in this case we call it a molecule. So, P4 is a phosphorus molecule.

Why does phosphorus exist as P4 but nitrogen as N2 gas?

It is because – N2 contains a pi bond between two N atoms. But P4 does not. It lacks the pi bond and it is because unstable pi tend to overlap among two P atoms.

Why does P4 exist and not N4?

In P4 form P-atoms are joined by single bonds while in N4, two, N-atoms are joined by double and other two by single bonds.

Why does nitrogen form n2 while phosphorus forms P4 and not P2 )?

Due to larger atomic size P is unable to form pi bonds and so it is tetra-atomic in which each P atom is linked with 3 other P atoms by 3 sigma bond. But, due to smaller atomic size N forms 1 sigma and 2 pi bonds i.e. triple bonds with other N atom and exists as diatomic molecule.

What does 4P mean in chemistry?

4P means 4 separate atoms of phosphorus ///// P4 means 4 atoms in a molecule of phosphorus. 4 Driving Forces of a chemical reaction.

What does P1 mean in medical terms?

Priority 1 (P1) or Triage 1 (T1): immediate care needed – requires immediate life-saving intervention. Colour code red.

What does p2 mean in medical terms?

P. 2. Symbol for the second pulmonic heart sound.

Why is N2 less reactive than P4?

N2 is less reactive than P4 due to high value of bond dissociation energy which is due to presence of triple bond between two N2 atoms of Ng molecule.

Why N2 exist as diatomic gas and P4 exist as tetra atomic solid?

Because of its small size and high electronegativity nitrogen forms Pπ – pπ multiple bonds. Therefore, it exists as a diatomic molecule having a triple bond between the two N-atoms. Instead it prefers to form P – P single bonds and hence it exists as tetrahedral, P4 molecules.
