Why do we need to find eigenvalues and eigenvectors?
Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors have their importance in linear differential equations where you want to find a rate of change or when you want to maintain relationships between two variables.
Why we find eigenvalues of a matrix?
Eigen vectors and eigen values help us understand linear transformations in a much simpler way and so we find them. Eigen vectors are directions along which a linear transformation acts simply either by stretching or compressing. Eigenvalues are the factors by which the compression or stretch occurs.
Why are eigenvalues and eigenvectors important in machine learning?
Decomposing a matrix in terms of its eigenvalues and its eigenvectors gives valuable insights into the properties of the matrix. Certain matrix calculations, like computing the power of the matrix, become much easier when we use the eigendecomposition of the matrix.
Why do we need eigenvectors?
Short Answer. Eigenvectors make understanding linear transformations easy. They are the “axes” (directions) along which a linear transformation acts simply by “stretching/compressing” and/or “flipping”; eigenvalues give you the factors by which this compression occurs.

What do eigenvectors represent in real life?
You might also say that eigenvectors are axes along which linear transformation acts, stretching or compressing input vectors. They are the lines of change that represent the action of the larger matrix, the very “line” in linear transformation. Notice we’re using the plural – axes and lines.
How to determine the eigenvectors of a matrix?
The following are the steps to find eigenvectors of a matrix: Determine the eigenvalues of the given matrix A using the equation det (A – λI) = 0, where I is equivalent order identity matrix as A. Substitute the value of λ1 in equation AX = λ1 X or (A – λ1 I) X = O. Calculate the value of eigenvector X which is associated with eigenvalue λ1. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for other eigenvalues λ2, λ3, as well.
What do eigenvectors tell you about a matrix?
Eigenvectors can help us calculating an approximation of a large matrix as a smaller vector. There are many other uses which I will explain later on in the article. Eigenvectors are used to make linear transformation understandable. Think of eigenvectors as stretching/compressing an X-Y line chart without changing their direction.
What do the directions of eigenvalues represent?
An eigenvector is a direction, in the example above the eigenvector was the direction of the line (vertical, horizontal, 45 degrees etc.). An eigenvalue is a number, telling you how much variance there is in the data in that direction, in the example above the eigenvalue is a number telling us how spread out the data is on the line.
