Why do I get the hiccups after I eat potatoes?
Many things can cause hiccups, one of these is resistant starch found in starchy foods like potatoes when they are eaten cold, says gastroenterologist Professor Terry Bolin, president of the Gut Foundation.
What foods trigger hiccups?
The following may trigger hiccups:
- eating hot or spicy food that irritates the phrenic nerve, which is located near the esophagus.
- having gas in the stomach that presses against the diaphragm.
- eating too much or causing stomach distension.
- drinking sodas, hot liquids, or alcoholic drinks, especially carbonated drinks.
Can liver disease cause hiccups?
Liver failure signs and symptoms include fatigue (feeling weak or tired), jaundice (yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes), swelling of the legs and abdomen, appetite loss and weight loss, nausea, itchy skin and hiccups.
