Who is most vulnerable lead?
Children six years old and younger are most susceptible to the effects of lead….Adults exposed to lead can suffer from:
- Cardiovascular effects, increased blood pressure and incidence of hypertension;
- Decreased kidney function; and.
- Reproductive problems (in both men and women).
Who absorbs lead most easily?
Lead is toxic to everyone, but children younger than 6 years are at greatest risk for problems from it. Their bodies absorb lead more easily than those of older kids and adults.
Where does lead come from naturally?
Lead is found in nature, rarely in pure form but in ores with other metals — the most abundant one in the Earth’s crust being galena (PbS). Natural formation of lead occurs by radioactive decay of uranium and thorium through radon (222Rn).
What family is lead in?
carbon family
About the Group Group 14 is the carbon family. The five members are carbon, silicon, germanium, tin, and lead. All of these elements have four electrons in their outermost energy level. Of the Group 14 elements, only carbon and silicon form bonds as nonmetals (sharing electrons covalently).
Why is lead still a problem?
Lead also causes long-term harm in adults, including increased risk of high blood pressure and kidney damage. Exposure of pregnant women to high levels of lead can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth and low birth weight.
Does lead stay in your system forever?
Once in the body, lead travels in the blood to soft tissues such as the liver, kidneys, lungs, brain, spleen, muscles, and heart. The half-life of lead varies from about a month in blood, 1-1.5 months in soft tissue, and about 25-30 years in bone (ATSDR 2007).
Can body get rid of lead?
The damage lead causes cannot be reversed, but there are medical treatments to reduce the amount of lead in the body. The most common is a process called chelation – a patient ingests a chemical that binds to lead, allowing it to be excreted from the body.
What rock is lead found in?
Galena
It is the world’s primary ore of lead and is mined from a large number of deposits in many countries. It is found in igneous and metamorphic rocks in medium- to low-temperature hydrothermal veins….

Who first discovered lead?
Lead was one of the earliest metals discovered by the human race and was in use by 3000 B.C. The ancient Romans used lead for making water pipes and lining baths, and the plumber who joins and mends pipes takes his name from the Latin word plumbum, meaning lead.
Is lead still used today?
The largest use for lead is in storage batteries in cars and other vehicles. Lead compounds are used as a pigment in paints, dyes, and ceramic glazes, and in caulk. Lead paint was banned for consumer use in 1978 in the U.S.; however, it is still used in industrial paints such as those used on cars, bridges, and ships.
