What will happen to the motor if propeller blade is bent or broken?
A bent, damaged or cracked propeller blade can produce severe vibrations on the vessel. The resulting unevenly pressure distribution loads on the propeller will increase loads on the shaft and can even damage the engine and transmission system.
What causes propeller failure?
The blades twist and flex. The stresses imposed on the prop are more concentrated in the small areas that are nicked or cut. These nicks and scratches act as stress ris- ers, which can weaken the blade enough to eventually cause it to fail. When an engine quits, the airplane can glide to a safe landing.
Does a bent prop affect performance?
A bent blade or nick will severely affect performance and could even damage the engine and transmission. Note that a bad prop doesn’t always look bad.
Does a propeller Bend?
Thrust loads on the blades, in reaction to the force pushing the air backwards, act to bend the blades forward. Air resistance acting against the blades, combined with inertial effects causes propeller blades to bend away from the direction of rotation.
Can I use a damaged propeller?
A dinged, bent or chipped propeller won’t work as it used to and can even affect the overall engine performance. Even if you examine yours on land and don’t see any aesthetic changes, keep in mind that the damage could be internal. It can affect your pitch and throw your entire boat off-kilter.
What can damage a propeller?
The prop may have struck against something hard, resulting in a chunk, a chip or a crack in the propeller blade. A cracked or damaged prop could eventually break off. A damaged prop is often out of balance, resulting in vibrations or cavitation.
How does a prop strike happen?
A propeller strike is: (1) any incident, whether or not the engine is operating, that requires repair to the propeller other than minor dressing of the blades as set forth in Part 1, B of this Service Bulletin or (2) any incident while the engine is operating in which the propeller makes contact with any object that …
What does a bent prop do?
It is the damage that can be done to the lower unit that you want to think about. A pitted prop isn’t that big of a deal to worry about. The bent prop, or propeller that is missing a blade, now this is a problem. A missing or bent prop throws the weight of the prop out of balance.
How does a damaged prop affect performance?
A damaged prop is often out of balance, resulting in vibrations or cavitation. Left unrepaired, this can result in a lack of performance, poor gas mileage, bad cornering, and lower engine unit damage.
Can you fix a bent propeller?
Yes, a boat propeller that has been bent can be repaired. Depending on the amount of damage will determine whether the prop should be repaired or replaced.
How bad is a bent prop?
The bent blade, as long as it isn’t too bad, can usually be repaired and your prop can be used for years to come. Knicking can also be repaired, but you will be losing some of the prop, which can change the performance of the boat.
