There are three big challenges facing today’s DBAs—a shift to an application-centric focus, the need to support multiple database platforms, and expanding responsibilities for managing database performance in the cloud as well as on premises.
Are database administrators going away?
The DBA role will shift over time. It will evolve into a blend of developer and architecture. Many of the tasks that DBAs oversee today such as backups/restores, security, configuration, and query tuning will gradually disappear. These are all tasks that can (and are) being automated away.

How hard is it to be a database administrator?
In my opinion, being a Database Administrator is easy…until something breaks that threatens the company and the burden of fixing and restoring whatever it is is on your shoulders. Being a Database Administrator (or Network or System Admin) is a position that requires a certain maturity level. It takes someone who works well under pressure.
