What is the function of the live neutral and earth wire?

The live wire carries the current to the appliance, while the neutral wire carries it back. The earth wire is for our protection, in case the live wire makes a contact with metal casing of an appliance. When this happens, the current will pass to the earth instead of our body, thus saving us.

What is the purpose of an earth wire in an appliance?

As the wire is made of copper, the earth wire provides a low resistance path to the ground. In the event of a fault, the large live current passing through the case earth wire will follow this path to the ground instead of passing through a person, and will blow the fuse rendering the appliance safe.

What is the purpose of live wire?

Each wire in the mains cable has an important function: The wire covered in brown plastic is the live wire. This carries the 230 V alternating potential difference from the power supply. The wire covered in blue plastic is the neutral wire and this completes the circuit from the appliance back to the supply.

What is the purpose of earth grounding?

Earth grounding systems help carry unexpected electrical charges from other sources away safely. For example, lightning strikes can energize components in houses. The earth grounding system can sometimes safely dissipate electricity from lightning.

Can I use earth as neutral?

No. It is never safe to use the earth wire as a neutral.

What is the difference between neutral wire and earth wire?

Because of safety concerns, the neutral wire is grounded at the mains panel, and the grounding wire is called earth because it is physically grounded to earth (via water pipes or metal rod). To sum up, a live wire carries the full load current, while a neutral wire carries some current, only when the loads are not balanced.

Does the neutral wire carry current to the appliance?

Yes,they do. As I have mentioned above. The live wire carries the current towards domestic appliances and others instruments and the neutral wire emerges from the appliance and carries the current back to source. Why is the neutral wire called ‘neutral’?

What is the purpose of the earth wire in a circuit?

This simply means that the current should flow from a source, through the appliance and back to source. The live wire carries the current to the appliance, while the neutral wire carries it back. The earth wire is for our protection, in case the live wire makes a contact with metal casing of an appliance.

What are neneutral wires and how do they work?

Neutral wires take the used electricity from the load and bring it back to the power supply. Okay, so that is all good and dandy, but batteries don’t power your home’s lightbulbs. Instead, they are connected to a transformer. And, because they aren’t connected to batteries, instead of using direct current, your electricity uses alternating current.
