Is there a limit to how sharp a blade can be?
Go for it. Such a blade (zero pressure required to cut a solid material) is not achievable. Even if you can produce an indefinitely thin edge, the body of the blade still has to force the sides of the cut apart. Not possible, because if you want a very sharp blade, it should be very thin.
What makes a sword sharp?
To make a sharp, hard, cutting edge, you need steel – an alloy of iron and carbon. In the first millennium BCE, the Etruscans began to create alloys of steel and iron, making swords that had edges hard enough to cut through armour, yet which were also sufficiently flexible to withstand the shock of battle.
Can you over sharpen a sword?
That super thin cutting edge just needs to be realigned. Your honing steel provides this realignment. At this point, re-sharpening the blade would be overkill. You’d be using an abrasive method to grind the steel blade, which removes a small amount of the metal to reestablish the blade’s sharpness.

What makes a Japanese sword so strong?
Japanese smiths discovered, similarly to many others, that iron sand (with little to no sulfur and phosphorus) heated together with coal (carbon) made the steel they called tamahagane. This allows the sword to have the strength and the ability to hold a sharp edge, as well as to cause the sword to tend to bend rather than flex under stress.
Why are razor blades so sharp?
If you notice, razor blades are very sharp. They are also very thin. The sharpness of a blade is determined by how the edge is angled. When you “sharpen” a blade, you are actually grinding small bits of metal off the blade to make it thinner toward the edge.
How do I know if my Katana is sharp enough?
A quick look at the diagram demonstrates the difference between a Katana with niku and one without. In cases where the sword does not FEEL sharp, but has Niku, the best way to know if it is sharp enough is by actually cutting with it (using correct technique, not just hacking but SLICING – Japanese sword techniques are described in detail here ).
