Is it bad to run your bike on reserve?
Running your motorcycle on reserve is not bad for the motorcycle. In fact, it is recommended to run your motorcycle on reserve occasionally. However, if you run your motorcycle on reserve when you run out of fuel, you are really out of fuel.
Do I need to turn my petcock off?
No, there is no legal requirement that you should turn the petcock to “OFF” when you shut your bike down at the end of your ride. However, it is a good practice, especially if you own an older motorcycle (1990s vintage or earlier), before gravity-fed carburetors were largely replaced with fuel injection systems.
How does reserve work on petcock?
When the petcock is set to “Reserve”, the “Reserve” tube is selected. When the petcock is set to “Off”, no tubes are selected, meaning no fuel sent to carburetors. When you set the petcock to “On” and start riding the fuel from the tank will be used until it reaches the top of the “Main” tube.
What is reserve mode in bike?
In motorcycles and cars, the fuel reserve setting indicates that the level of fuel in the tank is low. When the main fuel is exhausted, the motor will start sputtering, prompting the rider to change the position knob to continue riding with a known smaller quantity of fuel.
What does it mean when the fuel petcock is set off?
When the petcock is set to “Reserve”, the “Reserve” tube is selected. When the petcock is set to “Off”, no tubes are selected, meaning no fuel sent to carburetors. It is one of those very clever simple things. The fuel petcock mounted below the tank typically has 3 settings, Off, On and Reserve.
What does the ‘reserve’ setting on the fuel tank do?
Because in most cases the ‘reserve’ setting simply allows access to all the fuel, rather than a dedicated tank, the ‘reserve’ selection allows the rider to deplete the main fuel supply as well as the reserve. This causes no harm, except that the fuel may run out without warning.
Why do we drive in the main mode and not the reserve?
There is no rule that only we must drive in the MAIN mode and not the reserve. Even if we put the knob in the reserve mode and drive, there is no problem. But there is no point of a little fuel left when the fuel is completed. It means the reserve mode consumes both the MAIN and the RESERVE fuel.
What is the prime position of the fuel tank in motorcycle?
The prime position is used when you need to fill the carburetors after storage or running out of fuel. Do not leave it on Prime though, it behaves similar to Reserve. A regular motorcycle which is generally used for city commuting generally has a main tank and a reserve tank.
