Is I Ching a science?
My own view is that the I Ching deserves to be considered a book of early Chinese science, rather than divination. The I Ching comprises two books, an earlier classic dated to roughly 1,000BC, and an interpretive text written some 500 years later.
What does the I Ching represent?
The I-Ching represents the binary poles of reality as Yin and Yang. Like 1 and 0, these are abstract concepts that can represent the poles of any binary set, but in the text of the I-Ching are often discussed as female and male. They are notated with a broken line for Yin, and an unbroken line for Yang.
Who invented the I Ching?

For more than 5000 years the I-Ching has been used and relied on by many Chinese to aid in decision making and predicting the future. It is believed to have been invented by Fu Hsi, a legendary emperor of China.
What are changing lines in I Ching?
The changing lines show the points of difference between the two hexagrams: they are the places of movement, or tension, or exchange. They light up because this is where energy is flowing.
Is I Ching a religion?
While these thought systems do not as yet constitute religious orders, there is one defunct American group inspired by the I Ching that flourished in the 1970s.

How to Consult the I Ching Using Coins
- Take three coins with clear ‘heads’ and ‘tails’ sides.
- Flip all three coins to determine the nature of your hexagram’s first line. It will be one of the following four: a yin, a yang, a changing yin or a changing yang.
- Record the patterns.
- Identify your hexagram.
