How many hours do math PhD students work?
Doing an astro PhD right now, and most profs I talk to say between 60-70 hours of research per week is ideal. I imagine math would be similar. I know I’ve said this before, but 70 hours research a week is crazy– that means working for 10 hours a day, 7 days a week.
What does a math PhD student do?
I notice that many pure math PhD students, doing things like algebraic geometry or representation theory, drop out and enter industry and become software developers. The ones who finish their pure math PhDs also drop out and do things such as blogging, tutoring, etc.
Is getting a math PhD hard?

If it is high, then it’s not that hard, it just takes a decent work ethic and the ability to set aside 5–7 years for graduate school. There is no step in your education that is harder than what you are doing right now.

What does a mathematics student spend time on other than studying?
2- a Mathematics student has to spend on other than studying texts, like attending classes, other courses (e.g. computer) as well. How a typical university student in Mathematics spends a few hours in average on studying and knows a lot Mathematics and is able to start research, which I am not capable of?
