Patriarchy harms men by disconnecting them from their emotions, and frames seeking support as weakness. It’s an endless pressure for men to conform to a narrow prescription of masculinity, to compete with one another, and to prove their manhood by surrendering their individuality and denying their humanity.

Patriarchy is a social system in which men hold primary power and predominate in roles of political leadership, moral authority, social privilege and control of property. Some patriarchal societies are also patrilineal, meaning that property and title are inherited by the male lineage.

While women, being in the subordinate position in this hierarchy, suffer the effects of patriarchy to a far greater degree, men too know its cost. It’s easy to think that, because men have the power and privilege, that they truly have everything. But I’ve come to recognize that patriarchy’s picture and expectation of manhood is toxic.

These patriarchal societies are also patrilineal in nature, the male lineage inherits the property and the title, while females are considered the “property” of her in-laws. They are made to sacrifice their comfort and needs, so that male members can have enough to earn for the family. They are denied formal education and nutritious food.
