How do you know what strings to strum on a guitar when reading tabs?
The order of the strings in the tab, from top to bottom, is as follows:
- The thickest and lowest string (low E) is at the bottom, while the thinnest and highest string (high E) is at the top.
- In this example, you should press the third fret of the A string with your left hand and play that string with your right hand.
What is the difference between strumming and plucking?
A strum or stroke is a sweeping action where a finger or plectrum brushes over several strings to generate sound. In plucking, a specific string or designated set of strings are individually targeted to vibrate, whereas in strumming, a less precise targeting is usually used.
What note is an open strum?
In the standard tuning (EADGBE) the open chord is A11/E. This means that it is an A chord, with the added 11th (D), 9th (B) and 7th (G) and an E note in the bass. A lot of chords like these are used in jazz.
Which is easier plucking or strumming?
Strumming is easier than Fingerstyle because you play all the notes relevant to that chord. Fingerstyle is harder than strumming because you are picking individual notes and this requires greater finger dexterity.

When should you Strum a guitar down or up?
When strumming a guitar, you’ll use both downstrums (i.e. where your strumming hand moves down) and upstrums (where your strumming hand moves back up). There’s a simple logic behind when you should strum down or up, which we’ll get to shortly. All the strum patterns we’ll be looking at in this section are in a 4/4 measure.
Should I change chords when I learn a new strum pattern?
So, you don’t want to focus on playing your new strum pattern and have to think about changing chords. Instead, you want to play the strum rhythm on just one chord. This allows you to devote all your attention to the strumming. Below is a quick ‘one chord song’ from Strumming Skills Bootcamp, completely played on a G chord.
