How are there rocks in space?
Every day, about 500 tons of dust and rock from space collide with planet Earth. When this space debris burns up as it enters the atmosphere, it causes streaks of light called shooting stars, or meteors. Most of these rocks are fragments of broken asteroids (huge rocks that orbit the sun).
Where do rocks in space come from?
All meteorites come from inside our solar system. Most of them are fragments of asteroids that broke apart long ago in the asteroid belt, located between Mars and Jupiter. Such fragments orbit the Sun for some time–often millions of years–before colliding with Earth.
What is a rock floating in space called?
