Can I be a mathematician with a physics degree?
Yes, sure. But it is more difficult then doing the inverse, going from physics to math, in my opinion. The reason is the arduous path to learn quantum mechanics. A physics major takes around two years in courses about QM.
Can I get a PHD in math and physics?
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph. D.) in Mathematical Physics. This program offers advanced graduate training in the overlapping areas of mathematics, theoretical physics, and their applications from a unified point of view and promotes research in this field.
Is it better to major in physics or math?
Neither one often leads directly to a job – that is to say, most math majors and physics majors do not end up doing pure math or physics after they graduate. Many go into tech or consulting since it pays really well and fits well with their quant skillset. Math majors will have the advantage here for co Mathematics.
Is it worth it to study theoretical physics?
Theoretical physics is almost totally math anyway. Both math and physics are great exercises in logical thought – a very valuable skill. Now that megadata and statistics have become so important in so many fields, math and physics people have become important for the logic involved. I would do the physics degree, but that’s me.
Is it better to start learning physics or math first?
If you are more drawn towards abstract thinking, it may be better to start -like me- the math and learn physics along the way, while if you are more drawn towards understanding physical phenomena, it may be better to start -like most physicists- with physics and learn math along the way.
Is it better to be a physicist or computer scientist?
Both are good choices, and career prospects are plentiful in either direction. They are different paths, professionally, and due to personal bias, I think physics gives you slightly more flexibility (but only slightly). Lab-based work – this is where physicists have an advantage.
