Can DID alters communicate with each other?
✘ Myth: Communication with alters happens by seeing them outside of you and talking with them just like regular people — a hallucination. (We can thank The United States of Tara for this one.) Nope, not so much. This is a very rare, inefficient, and an extremely conspicuous means of communication.
How do you start communication with alters?
Alters generally communicate with each other internally, by sharing thoughts with each other (they are all part of the same brain!). The host may communicate with them by: Corresponding in a journal. My wife may write something in her journal and various alters may respond.
What does Switching look like?
Family members can usually tell when a person “switches.” The transitions can be sudden and startling. The person may go from being fearful, dependent and excessively apologetic to being angry and domineering. He or she may report not remembering something they said or did just minutes earlier.
What are the symptoms of dissociative fugue?
Once a dissociative fugue state has passed, you may experience symptoms like:
- Feelings of depression.
- Periods of grief.
- Feelings of shame.
- Discomfort or anger.
- Feelings of distress about being in an unfamiliar place.
- Feeling as though you have lost time.
Do Your addalters ever communicate with each other?
Alters are separate identities. Some of these alters may communicate with each other and some of them may not. When I was first diagnosed with DID, my alters did not communicate with each other at all. I was only aware of the current personality state that I was in.
What do your alters Know About You?
They know where the person lives, the phone number and the safe people to call. They know who the person has and has not met before, and when something is dangerous. This is important because some alters will become very frightened when they don’t know who they are with or where they are.
What are the benefits of communication with other alters?
Having communication helps the whole situation to be less scary and painful. It also helps a person to be aware and conscious of who he or she is when he or she splits from one alter to the next. A person’s system can be made up of few or many alters.
How long does it take for alters to show up?
Once alters start revealing themselves, it is typical for them to appear one after another in fairly quick succession, and then go for weeks or months with no more new ones appearing. This pattern is likely to lull you into the presumption that there simply are no more alters.
