Can a speculum cause damage?
The speculum might feel like it’s stretching out your vagina, but it only opens up the vaginal canal temporarily. It won’t widen or loosen your vagina. A speculum shouldn’t cause damage or injury when used by a trained doctor.
How can I make my speculum less painful?
Dr Kaye adds the test itself might cause some pain similar to menstrual cramps, “but that lasts maximum 30 seconds, and then it’s gone”.
- Wear comfortable clothes.
- Ask for a woman to do the test.
- Ask to change position.
- Don’t use lubricant.
- Use painkillers if necessary.
- Don’t self-medicate beyond that though.
Can a speculum pinch?
Specula are used by doctors during exams and procedures to open up the vaginal canal. While it’s normal for the patient to feel pressure while a speculum is in place, it should never be painful or pinch.
Is it normal to be sore after a pelvic exam?
It’s totally normal for women to experience a little bit of discomfort following a pelvic exam, especially if it’s their first one. It’s also common for women after a pap test to have mild cramping and/or light bleeding for a couple of days after a pap test (smear).
Can you use a speculum on yourself?
To perform a vaginal self-exam, you will need a strong light such as a flashlight, a mirror, a vaginal lubricant, antiseptic soap or alcohol, and a plastic speculum. Speculums are available at pharmacies that sell medical supplies.
Do smear tests hurt if you’re a virgin?
The cervical screening procedure won’t damage your hymen or affect your virginity in any way, although it may be a little more uncomfortable for those who haven’t had sex before.
Should I be in pain after a smear test?
A Pap smear can be uncomfortable. It’s not uncommon to experience cramping or mild bleeding as a result of the screening. However, heavy bleeding or severe cramping isn’t normal.
Why can I fit my finger in my cervix?
If one fingertip fits, the cervix is considered to be 1 centimetre dilated. If the tips of two fingers fit, this means the cervix is dilated two centimetres. Depending on the distance the two fingers can stretch will indicate further dilation. It is usual to refer to full dilation as 10 centimetres.
