Why should prisoners be punished?
The punishment aspect that receives the most scrutiny and research dollars is deterrence. Advocates of deterrence follow the reasoning that punishment is only useful if it serves to deter convicted offenders from further crime and deterring members of society from committing crimes in the first place.
Why is it better to rehabilitate prisoners?
Rehabilitation gives one a chance to learn about his/her debilitating problems and offers for one to learn how to change their behavior in order to not commit crime. Incarceration (punishment) puts the offender in a confines of a cell in order for one to think about the crime he/she committed.
Do prisoners deserve rehabilitation?
Unfortunately, research has consistently shown that time spent in prison does not successfully rehabilitate most inmates, and the majority of criminals return to a life of crime almost immediately.
Do you think prisoners should receive good treatment?
I do not feel they should receive good treatment: punishment should be adequate for the crime committed, but the prisoner should not be in threat of starvation, abusive treatment from other inmates or staff, or fear of medical neglect. Prisoners are in fact human beings and of course punishment was much worse in ancient times.
Should prisons be used as a form of punishment or rehabilitation?
This is why prisons should act as restraints from normal society as punishment for crime, but should also function more so as a form of rehabilitation to help them reflect on their crime and change for the better of society.
Why are prisons so bad today?
But a combination of strict sentencing guidelines, budget shortfalls and a punitive philosophy of corrections has made today’s prisons much more unpleasant–and much less likely to rehabilitate their inhabitants–than in the past, many researchers say.
Should the current prison system be reformed?
As after all, only reform will really leave a positive impact on the overall community unlike the punishment alone. Prisoners have it too easy. Another problem with the current prison system is that too many freedoms are given to the prisoners which sidetracks the whole reason of being there.
