Why is metal music not popular?
Well that’s because the masses don’t find metal appealing. Metal is pretty extreme in many aspects: The music, the playing, the feelings… It’s great, but it’s definitely not for everyone. Metal has been tabooed as evil music which makes it even more unappealing to people who doesn’t know about it.

Though it’s no surprise, metal fans have always been known to be “hardcore” and dedicated to the genre.

People like Pop music because they like Pop music. It’s just opinion and taste, inspired by their peers’ tastes. There is nothing wrong with liking any specific genre, so you can’t just say that people are ‘wrong’ to like it. This is coming from someone who hates Pop music.
Why do people hate metal so much?
Speaking for myself, it is because it [generally] lost originality and passion. It became formulaic and boring. The genre itself became populated by conservatives, performers who did not want to push and explore. That is the death of creation. If you followed metal like it were a figurative line graph, its creativity has peaked.
Why don’t radio stations play punk/rock/metal/alternative music?
The other reason is economics: radio stations play to win an audience so that advertizers will sponsor them. They play music the masses want to hear. That’s not what rock and metal and punk is about. It’s about expression and passion foremost. When that takes a back seat you can be sure you’ll have lackluster songs on that station.
