Why do people let leeches bite them?
Since the time of ancient Egypt, leeches have been used in medicine to treat nervous system abnormalities, dental problems, skin diseases, and infections. Today, they’re mostly used in plastic surgery and other microsurgery. This is because leeches secrete peptides and proteins that work to prevent blood clots.

Leeches can be great pets for those not too squeamish to keep them. They can survive for several months without food, require minimal care, and are unique creatures to keep in a fish tank. But like any pet, you have to know how the feed them and maintain them.
What are leeches afraid of?
Get hold of some tobacco leaves and soak them in water, after they’ve infused the water you can apply the water with a spray bottle. Some say that just having some tobacco in your socks can help deter leeches.
Has anyone been killed by leeches?
Although it’s not to say leeches are altogether harmless. There have been deaths from people in North Kenya drinking water containing the Myxobdella Africana leech. The victims suffered anemia, resulting in death. In cases treated with blood transfusions, the patients have survived.
