Who said discipline will set you free?
Having read this and then watched a few youtube videos of Jocko being interviewed he is has some great insights which we can all learn from. There is a phrase he uses in his interview with Tim Ferris that really resonated with me, “Discipline will set you free”.

Jocko Willink: While Discipline and Freedom seem like they sit on opposite sides of the spectrum, they are actually very connected. Freedom is what everyone wants — to be able to act and live with freedom. But the only way to get to a place of freedom is through discipline.

They are both related to choice; self-discipline is choosing to be in control of myself, and freedom is making a choice to act in a certain way. They are both connected to the concept of liberty.

Discipline brings stability and structure into a person’s life. It teaches a person to be responsible and respectful. The observance of well-defined rules is the basis of society. It promotes good human behavior to better society and make it a more enjoyable place for everyone to live.

Because contrary to what most people believe, discipline and freedom do not exist on the opposite end of the spectrum. The latter is a result of the former. So what does it mean when we say that discipline equals freedom? Discipline is not only about self-constraint. It is about allocating time and thought appropriately where they belong.
