An ethical vegan is someone whose lifestyle and choices are shaped by their desire to avoid cruelty and suffering to animals at all practical costs. Ethical veganism goes far beyond a plant-based diet. The limits an ethical vegan faces don’t just stop at their food choices.
What were vegans called before vegan?
Donald Watson, founder of the Vegan Society, coined the word vegan in 1944 as a statement against vegetarians who ate dairy products. He took the first and last letters of the word vegetarian to create his orthodox version of vegetarianism.

Why can’t vegans eat palm oil?
Palm oil is a vegetable and is technically vegan in its raw form. In principle, palm oil is vegan, but many vegans choose to avoid the oil, because they argue that extraction of palm oil exploits animals and causes them pain and suffering, something vegans avoid. Palm oil is damaging the environment.

When did the Vegan Society become a charity?
The society was first registered as a charity in August 1964 but its assets were later transferred to a new charity when it also became a limited company in December 1979. The definition of veganism and the charitable objects of the society were amended and refined over the years.
