How to be an Upstander
- 1) Be a mate to the person being bullied. Let the person being bullied know that you’re there for them.
- 2) Shift the focus away from the bullying situation.
- 3) Call the person out on their bullying behaviour.
- 4) Leave the situation, and then act.
- 5) Ask for help.
How can I be an Upstander?
Becoming an Upstander looks like this:
- Taking action by telling the bully to stop.
- Taking action by getting others to stand up to the bully with them.
- Taking action by helping the victim.
- Taking action by shifting the focus and redirecting the bully away from the victim.
- Taking action by telling an adult who can help.
How do you deal with bullying in the classroom?
Actively foster an environment where students who are bullied (and their peers) feel safe coming forward and reporting their concerns. Encourage students to ask for help if they need it, and emphasize how brave it is to report a bullying situation.
What should you do if you see someone being bullied?
Be a friend to the person who is being bullied, so they do not feel alone. Tell a trusted adult if you see someone being bullied. Help the person get away from the bullying without putting yourself at risk. Don’t enable bullying by providing an audience.
How can I Stop my Friends from bullying ME?
Take a stand as a group. Talk with your friends about how you can all stand up to bullying. There’s strength in numbers. Start or join an anti-bullying group or a gay-straight alliance at your school. Don’t repeat rumors. Bullies sometimes try to start rumors — you can help stop a rumor by not spreading it.
Do high school students experience bullying or harassment?
High school students too often experience bullying or harassment by their peers. High school is a very difficult time for some students. They may be frequently taunted when moving about the school. They may feel unsafe in the school building. They may also be fearful about being beaten up at any moment.
