To get a distinction in your Master’s, you will need to earn 70\% or higher in your final grade. How you achieve more than 70\% will depend on the nature of your course, and how you best learn.

Does the grade of your master’s matter?
The short answer is that, yes, your graduate school GPA matters. But, of course, there’s a lot more nuance to it than that. Most graduate schools require students to keep a higher grade-point average than during their undergrad years. Usually, these programs require a B (3.0) equivalent at a minimum.

I think most require you to have 70 for the dissertation as well as an average of 70 in the coursework. I’m not aware of any where you have to have over 70 in every module. And some unis grade differently, eg for many Cambridge masters 60 is the pass mark and 75 the distinction mark.

How do marks affect my final Masters degree grade?
If your course involves a dissertation, the mark that you achieve for this will also impact your final masters degree grade. Often, to achieve a certain classification, you are required to achieve that mark as minimum on your dissertation, for example, for a merit, your dissertation needs to score 60 or above, and for a distinction, 70 or above.

If you did not get a distinction in the dissertation then no matter what your coursework marks you could not be given a distinction. I imagine this is the same for most universities. The marks are not really comparable to undergraduate level. Everything is harder, but the marking system is vaguely the same.
