SO a colossal size dragon will have access to level 9 spells. So, the dragon can fly outside the tarrasque’s reach, buff itself with a bunch of spells….and then fly down to kick its ass. Moral of the story, 5e tarrasque is weak and dragons beat tarrasques in any edition.

Have the powergamer try to be better with out of combat stuff, in exchange for you others in the party setting up cooperation combos and stuff. Most of all, try to have fun. Combatless encounters, more RP and intrigue. Maybe throw in a moral dilemma or two. Every character has a weakness.
Do power gamers outclass other players?
Most powergamers I know don’t do so in order to completely outclass the other players, but rather because they enjoy the optimization process. If this guy is that type of person, this will give him an opportunity to optimize more while helping balance out the party’s overall power level.

What’s his build? 5e does a pretty good job of stopping overpowered crap. He’s probably doing something he isn’t allowed to do RAW. That or he isn’t as overpowered as you think. Some things seem more OP than they are, and some characters have their power front loaded to lower levels and drop off later.
Is there any advice on mechanical optimization for 5e?
There’s so little context here that it’s hard to really give any sort of meaningful advice, especially for a game like 5e that has very little in the way of actual mechanical optimization.
