How do I know if my chest binder is too small?
The binder should feel snug, but you should be able to take a deep breath. Take that deep breath as you feel more like you! But, if it hurts or you cannot take a full deep breath in, then your binder is too small.
What do you do if your binder is too small?
When your binder is too small, you have a few options: alter the size by yourself, buy a smaller binder, or return it, if your store allows it. If you are crafty and know sewing, you can easily make the binder smaller by bringing the side seams in. Don’t try to shrink the binder in a hot dryer, as you will damage it.

The tightness is a double-edged sword — sometimes you feel like you’re being suffocated, but at other times a binder feels like a close hug. The longer I used binding, the more I could feel my body deteriorating. The physical pain got worse but so did the emotional.
Can you stretch your binder?
If you have to wear it for longer than the reccomended time, we suggest going to the bathroom or another private space and removing your binder for 5 – 10 minutes to stretch (see below for more information on stretching).

Make sure the binder is snug, but not too tight. You should be able to breathe comfortably. Keep the abdominal binder clean and dry. If it gets wet or dirty, it may irritate your skin or increase your risk of infection.
Should you size up in binders?
Do not intentionally go down in size; you will not be able to put your binder on. In a correctly fitting binder, you should be able to breathe without trouble. Your binder should not cause excessive discomfort or dig into your skin. If you experience any of this, you likely have the wrong size!

We recommend binding for less than 6-8 hours at a time. Give your body time to rest and recover and don’t sleep in your binder. Sleeping in a binder can cause all sorts of complications including breathing problems similar to sleep apnea and generally interrupt your ability to sleep. Just don’t do this.
