Answer: Not all soldiers go to war. In the end, it’s up to the Department of Defense which units are deployed and when. Also, remember that not all soldiers who are deployed to a combat zone will actually see combat.

Is the US Army still going to war?
It’s still “going to war” in a sense, but just not maybe the one that the question was implying. Yes but only if called to duty. Hence the name reserve.
Does the US Army Reserves go to war when deployed?
Yes. However…. in the U.S. Army Reserves there are no combat arms units, only combat support and combat service support. So more often for a reserve unit, a mobilization is something that supports active duty and National Guard elements. Does the Army serve the soldier or the soldier?
One of the things I despise most is the idea that the army serves the soldier. The army doesn’t serve you, you serve your country by joining the army. Fortunately, there are very few people that believe this because Basic Combat Training (BCT) does an outstanding job of smoking that idea out of recruits’ heads.
Would the US use the National Guard in a war?
Yes but only if called to duty. Hence the name reserve. But they do receive the same training as the regular army. If a war started with say, a world superpower. You can bet that not only will we call in reserves, but national guard. However we would most likely keep some National guard at home as well.
