Do others see you the way you see yourself?
“In general, people tend to see themselves through their own subjective lens,” clinical psychologist Dr. Carla Marie Manly, tells Bustle. With this bias, it’s natural that people see themselves differently than others see them.
Does your face look the same in the mirror?
This is because the reflection you see every day in the mirror is the one you perceive to be original and hence a better-looking version of yourself. So, when you look at a photo of yourself, your face seems to be the wrong way as it is reversed than how you are used to seeing it.
What do people see when they look at themselves in the mirror?
They see a horizontally reversed version of what you see in the mirror. You never actually get to see yourself. If you’re curious, it is possible to see what others see. You’ll need two mirrors, set at angles to each other in a V shape. Then stand in the open space between them and adjust them until they’re not distorting (Squishing) your image.
Why do people see me differently to what I see?
Your self-esteem plays more into what you see in a picture or mirror than the image itself. The image others see is the same as the non-reversing mirror, but like you, it’s also affected by what they think of you. Everything you see is processed and interpreted by your brain, so we’re all likely to see things a little differently.
Is it possible to change your appearance by looking at a mirror?
Well… yes and no. Mirrors don’t change anything physical about you, but just shows a different perspective. A mirror doesnt show you a reflection of left to right, but a reflection of forward to backward. It shows you what you are presenting to it.
Why is a mirror image more accurate than a photo?
A mirror shows a reversed image of your face, and our faces are subtly asymmetrical. Therefore, a mirror image will always look slightly different from how we appear to other people – in that regard a photo is more accurate.
