Can I breathe on the moon?
Although the Moon does have an atmosphere, it’s very thin and composed mostly of hydrogen, neon and argon. It’s not the sort of gaseous mixture that could sustain oxygen-dependent mammals such as humans. That said, there is actually plenty of oxygen on the Moon. It just isn’t in a gaseous form.
Do you need oxygen to survive on the moon?
Each cubic metre of lunar regolith contains 1.4 tonnes of minerals on average, including about 630 kilograms of oxygen. NASA says humans need to breathe about 800 grams of oxygen a day to survive. So 630kg oxygen would keep a person alive for about two years (or just over).
Can you hear sound on the Moon?
The air here on Earth allows sound waves to move from one point to another (sound can also move through water, steel, earth, etc… it just requires that particles/atoms/molecules are touching one another). Thus there is no sound on the Moon.
How can we breathe on the Moon?
The Moon is a pretty inhospitable place for humans. It’s all dry and dusty, and there’s no atmosphere for us to breathe. But there is a bunch of oxygen: The lunar regolith – the crumbly top layer of dirt and rubble on the Moon’s surface – is loaded with it. And now scientists have figured out how to get it out.
What can we get from the Moon?
On the one hand, you get a bunch of oxygen. On the other, a bunch of metal alloys that it was bound up with. Both of these would be really useful on any future lunar bases or colonies. Thanks to regolith samples returned from previous lunar missions, we know that oxygen is really quite abundant up there.

Is it possible to breathe through an oxygen mask?
No. A regular oxygen mask just gently blows oxygen at you, which won’t do you any good since you couldn’t inhale it (see How long will a person survive in space without a space suit if he somehow had a device blowing warm oxygenated air at him? ).
