Do male bees get honey?
A drone is a male honey bee. They gather neither nectar nor pollen and are unable to feed without assistance from worker bees. A drone’s only role is to mate with an unfertilized queen.
Do male or female honey bees gather nectar?
“Both sexes drink floral nectar for food, but only females collect pollen that serves as food for young bees, so they forage at greater rates than males.”
Can a single bee make honey?
A hive of bees must fly 55,000 miles to produce a pound of honey. One bee colony can produce 60 to 100 pounds of honey per year. An average worker bee makes only about 1/12 teaspoon of honey in its lifetime.
How are male and female honey bees produced?
Males, called drones, emerge from unfertilized eggs, and females emerge from fertilized ones and become the workers. So if the queen adds sperm to an egg, it will produce a female; if she withholds sperm, the egg will produce a male.
Are all honey bees female?
Worker bees are all female, and are all offspring of the queen. There are three types of honey bee within every hive: workers, drones, and a queen. The workers and the queen are female. Queens are reproductive and are larger than the workers.
Are queen bees born or made?
Queen bees are born as regular bee larvae, however the worker bees will selectively choose the healthiest larvae which are then placed within their own special chamber and fed more honey (also known as “Royal Jelly”) than the normal “worker” or “drone” larvae.
What is the lifespan of a honey bee?

Can a male bee become a queen?
While male bees serve no architectural or pollinating purpose, their primary function (if they are healthy enough) is to mate with a queen bee. If they are successful, they fall to the ground and die after copulation. Any fertilized egg has the potential to become a queen.
