Do paladins need Warcaster?
Andrew Payne’s answer is spot on; you don’t need War Caster to cast spells. You just cast them. Beyond those, clerics and paladins are unique in that they can have a shield with their holy symbol on it that acts as an divine focus.
Why is hexblade paladin so good?
One level of Hexblade removes the MAD. Being able to focus on Charisma means paladins have better save DCs, higher bonus from Aura of Protection, and maintain their melee damage potential.

Does sacred weapon stack with Hexblade?
Oath of Devotion’s Sacred Weapon works great with Hex Warrior. Oath of Vengeance’s Vow of Enmity works great with Hexblade’s Curse to improve your crit chance against an enemy (which in turn lets you smite for big damage.)
Can you wield a staff and a shield?
It doesn’t block shields. Staff of Defense just gives a flat +1 on top of anything. You’d end up with AC 19. Keep in mind you need to be proficient with Shields though.
Can a warlock wear a shield?
Warlocks only get proficiency in light armor, so if you want to use a shield (either an armored book or normal shield) without penalty then you would need to take levels in a class that grants shield proficiency or take the Moderately Armored feat.
