Why does my coolant smell like exhaust?
If you’re absolutely sure that you smell coolant out of your exhaust pipe, then that means it’s leaking into one or more combustion chambers, getting burned up and emitted out of the exhaust.
How do you check exhaust gas?
A probe is placed in the tailpipe of the car and the exhaust gases are measured following a strict procedure. The exhaust gas analyser is used for measuring 4 gases, oxygen (O2), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2) and hydrocarbons (HC) as well as calculating lambda (λ) a measure of air/fuel ratio.
How do I know if I have exhaust gas in my coolant?
Squeeze and release the squeeze bulb on the suction tube repeatedly to draw air from the coolant system through the fluid in the suction tube. The fluid in the tube is normally blue, but if exhaust gases are present in the coolant, the fluid will change color from blue to yellow.
How do I know if there is coolant in my exhaust?
The smell of coolant and/or a whitish cloud of smoke from the exhaust at startup can be an indicator of coolant in the combustion chambers, which can be confirmed by a chemical test for exhaust hydrocarbons in the coolant.
How do you know if your exhaust is leaking coolant?
As the coolant leaks into the hot combustion chamber it will quickly evaporate. If the leak is large enough you will notice white, sweet smelling smoke coming from your tail pipe, but if it is small, your exhaust may look normal.
When would the exhaust gas recirculation valve likely be open?
The EGR valve is closed when the engine is starting up. During idle and at low speeds, only a small amount of power is required, and therefore only a small amount of oxygen, so the valve gradually opens – it can be up to 90\% open at idle.
Can you lose coolant through the exhaust?
A Coolant leaking internally from the intake manifold gasket or cylinder head gasket can end up in one of two places: mixed with the engine oil or burned with the air-fuel mixture in the exhaust. But any significant coolant consumption can strip oil from cylinder walls and etch or corrode aluminum pistons.
