Can you inject into your jugular?
Injection into the jugular vein can have serious adverse health consequences, including jugular vein thrombosis, deep neck infections, pneumothorax, endocarditis and sepsis. This study examined the prevalence of, and factors associated with, jugular vein injection among a large sample of PWID in the United Kingdom.
How do you give a vein injection?
Insert the needle into your vein with the needle bevel (opening) facing up, at a 15 to 35 degree angle, and always in the direction of the heart. The more perpendicular the needle is to the injection site, the greater chance you have of sticking the needle through the vein instead of into it.

Release the adhesive tape and transparent dressing from the skin. Withdraw the catheter outside of the vein, and apply direct pressure with gauze for at least 5 minutes.

Procedure
- Place patient in Trendelenburg position and rotate head to opposite side of cannulation.
- Position yourself at the head of the bed facing the patient.
- Clean skin with appropriate antiseptic.
- Use non-dominant thumb to provide counter-traction and index finger to tamponade EJV just superior to clavicle.
