Finding two gravestones for the same person – particularly a widowed person who marries again, or perhaps moves further west – is something not uncommon in genealogical research. A gravestone may be inscribed with both parties’ names with the death date of the living party left empty for when their time comes.
Can you put two headstones on a grave?
Regardless of the actual gravesite, you can still have both names listed on a companion headstone. Keep in mind the purpose of a memorial is to give family and friends a place to remember their loved one. It is entirely appropriate to put the spouse’s names together even if one resides at a different location.

Others may have a “memorial” stone in one cemetery and be buried in another. Still others, who might be cremated, may have their ashes deposited in two cemeteries. My colleague David Allen Lambert plans to have his ashes buried locally in Massachusetts as well as in Nova Scotia, beside a memorial gravestone he erected for his great-grandparents.
How much does it cost to buy a grave marker?
Sometimes a temporary grave marker is included with your purchase of a headstone. If not, you should be able to purchase one from about $20 and up. They can be made of metal, plastic, wood, etc. You may be able to make one yourself for a personal touch. Infant gravestones may appear within or near a family’s plot.
