Can a vaccine damage your arm?
In rare instances, however, a vaccination can result in severe and longer-lasting shoulder pain and bursitis after vaccination. The pain can be accompanied by weakness and difficulty moving the affected arm. This kind of severe reaction is referred to as “Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration,” or SIRVA.
How do you know if a vaccine is injured?
Symptoms can include loss of vision, muscle weakness, and/or difficulty coordinating simple movements. Should you or a loved one experience such symptoms following vaccination, is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
How are vaccine injuries treated?
Your doctor may recommend one or more of the following treatments:
- Rest. SIRVA injuries involve inflammation, and simply resting the muscle, ligaments and tendons in your shoulder may lead to recovery.
- Physical therapy.
- Pain medication.
- Steroid injections or oral steroids.
- Surgery.

SIRVA has been reported in 19 women and seven men aged between 22 and 89 years. Injuries of the subacromial bursa, subdeltoid bursa, tendons and muscles of the rotator cuff, especially the supraspinatus muscle, were common. Damage to the subchondral humerus was also reported in four patients.
Is SIRVA serious?
The main signs of SIRVA are serious shoulder pain and less range of motion, meaning trouble with moving your shoulder normally. The symptoms usually show up within 48 hours after you get a vaccine shot in your upper arm.
Which vaccines hurt the most?
Some people report significant pain from certain vaccines, like the ones that inoculate against HPV, hepatitis A and B and especially DTaP, which includes diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccines.
